UA's Griffith leads women past Wash. St.

UA freshman Lisa Griffith had five three-pointers in the second half to lead the Wildcats over the Washington State women's basketball team, 62-53 last night at Friel Court in Pullman, Wash.

"I was really on Lisa at halftime to start shooting, and she really opened things up in the second half," UA head coach Joan Bonvicini said.

Arizona (21-5, 11-4 in the Pacific 10 Conference) trailed 33-23 at halftime and 38-32 with under 10 minutes to play, but took the lead for good off of four Griffith three-point shots.

Junior Adia Barnes contributed a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, but had problems with foul trouble. Junior center Marte Alexander had 10 rebounds, eight points and four blocks. Freshman Felecity Willis had a team-high five assists.

"I am just really proud of the team," Bonvicini said. "We hadn't won up here in three years. Now we need to play even better."

Arizona out-rebounded the Cougars, 51-39, grabbing 22 offensive rebounds to WSU's nine, with just two of those coming in the final 20 minutes.

"We were just a tired team in the second half," Cougar head coach Harold Rhodes said.

Arizona plays Washington tomorrow on FoxSports West at 5 p.m. Tucson time. UA has never beaten UW on the road.

"It wasn't pretty, but we won," Bonvicini said. "We came up here with one thing in mind- and that is to sweep. We have never won in Seattle, now we're due."
