Laxcats suffer first loss of the year in California

The Arizona men's club lacrosse team had a good trip to Northern California, beating second-ranked Sonoma State, but also suffered their first loss of the season.

The Laxcats lost, 14-11 to California-Davis on Sunday afternoon in Davis, Calif.

The game was one that went back and forth, with Davis leading after the first quarter, 4-1 and the Laxcats leading at the half, 7-5.

"We still felt that we could get back into the game when we were down at the half," Laxcats head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said.

"They (UC Davis) played well at their place and are a tough team to beat," Felton said.

The Laxcats beat Sonoma State, 12-11 in overtime. Sophomore attacker Dan Price won it with his third goal of the game, scoring off of a feed from goaltender Dave Beer.

"The win was a good one for us, but hurt with the loss of Dave Wilner," Felton said.

Wilner, a senior attacker, got hurt in the third quarter against Sonoma State and did not return. He is questionable for Saturday's home game against UCLA.

"We need to learn from experience," Felton said. "Accept it, and that will make us stronger, and take it out against UCLA."

Arizona remained fourth in the Western Collegiate Lacrosse League Coaches poll. The Laxcats trail Whittier, UC-Santa Barbara and Sonoma State, even after the upset.

"I'm disappointed and shocked at the recent poll," Felton said.

The UA women's lacrosse won its final home match of the year, beating Loyola Marymount, 19-2 on Saturday at the Rincon Field Sports Complex.

The Laxcats led 12-2 at halftime. The lacrosse team was led by junior attackers Jessica Deal and Andrea Bozzolo. Each had 4 goals, with Deal recording 3 assists and Bozzolo 2.

The lacrosse team improved to 7-1 overall, 3-0 in the Southwest Women's Lacrosse League.

"We were a much more advanced team, and the defense really stepped up today," Deal said.

Sarah Sheer, Emily Rankin and Jillian Gant each had two goals as well.

The team plays UC-Santa-Barbara and Westmont in California this weekend.
