Mysterious fliers posted around campus prompt investigation

The Associated Students Elections Commission is investigating the source of hundreds of 2 1/2-by-5 1/2-inch campaign fliers that appeared in classrooms and on building doors yesterday.

Allen Wagner, general manager of KAMP Student Radio, submitted a written complaint regarding the unattributed fliers to the Elections Commission yesterday. He said the station was worried that the student body would falsely think KAMP distributed the fliers and endorsed the 13 candidates whose names are listed on them.

The fliers support the referendum to implement a student fee for KAMP and contain an insignia and slogan similar to those in a KAMP advertisement in recent editions of the Arizona Daily Wildcat, including today's.

KAMP's advertisements include a graphic that says "Rock & Vote." The anonymous fliers use the slogan "Rock the vote."

Wagner's complaint states, "KAMP wished to make clear that we in no way officially endorse, support or take a position on any candidate in this year's election."

Elections Commissioner Anthony Hill said the commission did not know the person or group responsible for the fliers.

If a candidate or his staff paid for the fliers, the candidate is in violation of the ASUA Elections Code, Hill said.

The code states that candidates are responsible for declaring on their expense forms all campaign materials that are distributed on campus.
