Women's tennis hosts No. 56 Syracuse

The fifth-ranked UA women's tennis team plays teams ranked in the top 25 every weekend. Southern Cal is the lowest ranked team in the Pacific 10 Conference and it stands at No. 24.

Yet, today's match with No. 56 Syracuse still concerns UA head coach Becky Bell.

"If you take someone lightly, you're looking at a loss," she said. "Whether you're playing (second-ranked) Stanford or you're playing a team that's not ranked as high, you need to come out ready to play no matter what because they will be gunning for us."

The Wildcats (7-5 overall, 1-4 in the Pac-10 Southern Division) start at 2 p.m. at Robson Tennis Center.

"I don't care what Syracuse is ranked. They are good and we need to be ready to play," Bell said. "It's true that we don't know that much about them, but I think it's really a matter of just being focused and playing the kind of tennis that we know that we can play."

The Orangemen (4-6) beat No. 45 Maryland 5-4 in their last match. Syracuse's top player Nicole Strnadova is 5-5 in singles on court one this season.

"Obviously with the top ten teams the (matches) are more intense, but I think every match for us is just as important," UA sophomore Karen Goldstein said.

Nagging injuries have hampered the Wildcats all season. Junior Betsy Miringoff pulled her hamstring last week and didn't play singles over the weekend.

Bell said the injuries are on a day-to-day basis, therefore, the lineup will not be determined until match time.

"I'm not sure who will be in and who will be out," she said "We may need to change some doubles teams, too."
