Math and science knowledge needed to achieve success in modern world

Editor:

This is in response to Erin Stein's letter which appeared in Monday's Daily Wildcat. She argued that, "fine arts are jilted in favor of math and science," going on to say, "What makes math and foreign language superior?" Let's see if we can figure this out together, shall we?

The computer you probably wrote your letter on was designed by mathematically fluent computer engineers. The paper it was written on is the result of advances in modern chemical and industrial engineering. The alarm clock that woke you up this morning, the buildings you live and learn in, and the electricity that powers it all came from decades of scientific and mathematical research. And in this day of unity in the technological world that you live in, proficiency in a foreign language allows you to communicate with people who are 'virtually' next door.

Without math and science, there would be no place for your arts. In fact, very may old works of art have now been reconditioned for your enjoyment using the latest in technology. Math and science are primary in this world, art is very much secondary. Art also isn't the only area that promotes creative thinking as you suggest, Ms. Stein. I invite you or anyone interested to examine the bridges at the new aerospace building and then try to honestly say that math and science aren't creative as well.

So, Ms. Stein, you have two choices. Either become a productive member of this modern, technological society, or stop whining and get out of our way. Let the scientists, engineers, and skilled laborers who put our ideas to practice continue to take care of you as we have always done.
