Men 'just flat' in losses to Fresno St., UNLV

The Arizona men's tennis team was simply unable to hit the big shots when they counted over the weekend.

"I'm kind of at a loss to explain (Saturday)," UA head coach Bill Wright said. "We were just flat - it's just unexplainable."

Arizona suffered its seventh-straight dual match loss when No. 32 Fresno State shut them out 7-0 at the Fertitta Tennis Complex in Las Vegas.

Arizona's strongest effort came from senior Roland Kupka. After dropping the first set, 6-4, Kupka responded with a 6-2 win. In the third set, however, Andy Scorteanu crushed Arizona's hopes of earning a point by defeating Kupka, 6-1 and improving the Bulldogs' overall record to 11-9.

"Saturday was just a bad performance," Wright said. "They just played better every spot down the line."

The Wildcats (5-10 overall, 0-7 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) fared a little better on Friday but still lost, 5-2 to UNLV.

"We were in that match and the guys really fought and really played a good match," Wright said.

Seniors Henrik Wagner and Tom Haugland had the lone UA doubles victory of the weekend.

The Wildcats managed to win two singles sets after dropping the doubles point on Friday when Kupka and junior Jerome Oliveri defeated their opponents in straight sets.

Wagner and junior Mike Mackay both lost their matches in three sets.

"Mike did everything he'd been doing (in the third set) and (his opponent) just came up with a couple big shots and Henrik's guy came up with a couple big shots, too," Wright said.

The Rebels improved to 15-4 overall in winning their fifth-straight dual match in Friday's win.
