Arizona women drop 2 in Bay Area; lose season series to Stanford, Cal

The UA women's tennis team finished its series against the Bay Area schools this weekend on a low note.

Besides remaining winless against Stanford and California this season, the No. 14 Wildcats were unable to win a single match on their trip.

"It was just a really disappointing weekend overall because we've all been working so hard," UA junior Betsy Miringoff said.

The No. 11 Golden Bears didn't even let the match go into doubles play by winning all six singles matches and thus clinching the five individual victories need for a win.

Cal's Amanda Augustus had the upset of the day, defeating seventh-ranked Vicky Maes, 6-4, 7-5 in the top position.

The Wildcats (13-8 overall, 2-7 in the Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) came close to sending the match into doubles when senior Khristen Pietrucha and sophomore Monique Allegre's sent their matches into three sets.

The Golden Bears pulled off victories in both of the decisive sets.

"I am very proud of Khristen and Monique's effort," UA head coach Becky Bell said. "They gave 100 percent and did everything they could possibly do to win the matches and they just didn't, but I couldn't have asked more out of them than what they gave."

The Wildcats did not fare much better in Friday's match against second-ranked Stanford at the Taube Tennis Stadium in Palo Alto, Calif.

After Stanford clinched the match by winning the six singles matches, they continued to excel in the optional doubles play, capturing a 9-0 team victory.

"We're disappointed because we expected to give them a better match then we did and they dominated us," Miringoff said.

The Wildcats' strongest effort of the afternoon came from Miringoff. She was the only player to send a match into three sets against the Cardinal.

After Stanford's Ania Bleszynski won the first set 6-4, Miringoff fought back to earn a 7-6 win. Bleszynski, ranked 35th in the country, outlasted Miringoff in the final set, winning 7-5.

"It's just really frustrating for me because a year ago I wouldn't have lost the matches that I'm losing," Miringoff said.
