Gunshots were fired between two cars just south of campus early yesterday, police said.

A small car fired "numerous shots" at a second car, said Officer J.D. Kragnes of the Tucson Police Department. No injuries were reported.

The two cars were travelling south on North Santa Rita Avenue at about 1:15 a.m., said Arizona Daily Wildcat reporter Alicia Caldwell, who was at the complex at the time of the shooting. She said she heard 10 to 12 shots fired.

Caldwell said the second car, a Chevrolet Monte Carlo, hopped the curb and hit a utility pole near Sun Terrace Apartments, 1150 E. Eighth St. She said there was a third car involved in the incident, but it sped off southward.

Caldwell said she was asked by police about the third car, but Kragnes said police report summaries made no mention of a third car.

When the second car hit the pole, the passengers of both it and the first car left their vehicles, Caldwell said.

The passengers began yelling at each other, and the Monte Carlo's passengers ran south down Santa Rita, Caldwell said. She said she did not know how far the passengers ran or if they were caught.

Caldwell said four to six people were in the Monte Carlo, while four people were in the smaller car.

Kragnes said no arrests were made in the incident. Police could not confirm if the case was still under investigation.
