A defective electrical panel caused a power outage that has made computers and fax machines inoperable on the Main Gate Building's fifth floor for the past day and a half.

On Wednesday around 4 p.m., all of the power outlets on the fifth floor went out. Everything else, air conditioning, telephones and lights, are still working, said Danette Golis-Variano, an administrative associate in the Financial Services Office at Main Gate.

Electricians from Facilities Management arrived at 7 a.m. yesterday to fix the problem, Golis-Variano said.

About 80 people from four different departments work on the fifth floor. The departments affected are Sponsored Projects, APEX Early Outreach, Technology Transfer and half of the Financial Services Office.

"This hasn't impeded our progress at all," said Glory Novak, senior business manager in the Human Resources office. "It's kind of refreshing to have a bit of down time to do filing and things that we normally don't have time to do."

Employees that needed to use fax machines and computers moved to the fourth floor, where equipment was working.

Because Main Gate is a new building, the cost for fixing the defective paneling will be covered by the building's warranty, Golis-Variano said.

She said a new electrical panel was reordered and the problem should be fixed sometime today.
