Golf carts provided the horse power yesterday afternoon as students took to the UA Mall to play polo and raise a little money for the Associated Students Escort Services.

"I think it's pretty hilarious. Everyone sees these golf carts driving around campus, and now they actually get to drive them," said Carin Claerhout, media arts junior who volunteers for Escort Services.

Students armed with hockey sticks skidded around the Mall on golf carts, trying to avoid high-speed collisions while chasing an elusive volleyball.

Tim Walker, Escort Services director, said he got the idea for the event from a scene in the movie "Navy Seals." He said he thought it looked like a fun way to raise awareness and promote Escort Services.

"Anyway, I think normal polo is cruel to horses," he added.

Carts crashed into each other several times during the two-hour event; nobody was hurt and none of the carts were seriously damaged.

Michael Board, journalism junior, said he thought golf-cart polo was a lot of fun, despite being slightly dangerous.

"It makes me want to go out on the golf course and wreak havoc," he said.

Classi Carts provided two of four carts for the competition, which was promoted by KFMA radio.

Players contributed $2 to Escort Services, and game winners were given KFMA T-shirts.

Walker said Escort Services raised about $30 at the event.

"We could have done better, but a lot of people saw us, and hopefully they will want to give it a try next time," he said.

Walker said he plans to hold another golf-cart polo event sometime next month.
