University could do much more to be bicycle friendly

Editor:

With respect to the closing of the Olive Street underpass, if the UA really were bicycle friendly, it would use some imagination to make this and other underpasses safe for both pedestrians and bicyclists. For a start, the bicycle lanes could be widened and dividers installed.

To stop bicycle traffic because of a fatal accident is absurd - is a road closed to cars after a fatal accident?

I suggested over two years ago that the bollards (to keep out cars) at the entrances to the two remaining underpasses be removed from the bicycle lanes. After a year they solved the problem at one of the four entrances by repainting the lines in a slight curve. There are still six bollards standing within the bicycle lanes in the two underpasses which are still open.

If a rider were to hit one of these at night, it would be an easy lawsuit. With this kind of imagination, it's easier to keep the Olive Street underpass closed.
