Career Services is now able to help students find jobs 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Wildcat Job Line is a telephone service that connects students to job opportunities any time of day, said Marie Rozenblit, director of Career Services.

"Any student enrolled on campus can use the service for free," she said. "And being able to access the system day or night makes it convenient for all students."

In August, the Wildcat Job Line received over 7,000 calls from students. On average, about 1,000 students use the service a week, Rozenblit said.

The service is just as convenient for the employers as the students, she said. Employers also benefit by having a student population of 35,000 potential employees.

Employers can access the system any time of day, and once they enter the job opening, it becomes active immediately, Rozenblit said.

"It's easy and self-explanatory," said Norma Ortega, an office specialist at Extended University who has used the system twice to post job openings.

Ortega said that before, she would have to fax the open positions to different departments but never knew if they were being posted.

"As more people take advantage of the program, it becomes more convenient for everyone," she said.

David Byrne, research scientist of entomology, said the system worked well, but once the job he posted was filled, he could not get the service turned off.

"I called four times to have it turned off," he said. "It worked out very well except for the mishap."

Rozenblit said, "That is unusual. Normally the job listing is deleted the same day the employers call."

She said she is looking into the matter.

When students call the Job Line, they are given the option to hear full- or part-time job opportunities, on campus or work study positions, or community service and student leadership positions.

Two other options exist for a list of employers coming to campus seeking to interview graduating students and internship opportunities.

From there, students have the option of nine job categories to choose from. They may choose to listen to every job opening within a specific job category or to that day's new listings.

Categories range from retail, sales and marketing to science and health-related job opportunities.

The Wildcat Job Line was activated during the spring semester, eliminating the job board outside the offices of Career Services, Rozenblit said.

"The job board was not convenient for many students because it was only accessible during open office hours," she said.

In the past, students also had to pay a $3 fee each semester to have access to the names and numbers of job opportunities.

Now students can access the Job Line anywhere a phone is, Rozenblit said. There are also phones located outside of Career Services, but not many students use them because the service is accessible from any telephone, Rozenblit said.

The Wildcat Job Line number is 791-6456. The system asks for a student identification number to verify enrollment status.
