Volleyball team advances

The Arizona women's volleyball team beat San Diego in a five-set thriller last night to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Wildcats defeated the host Toreros 15-4, 7-15, 15-7, 8-15, 15-13 at the USD Sports Center. Arizona (20-9) will face Pacific on Saturday in Stockton, Calif.

The Wildcats, who were the highest ranked team to not open the tournament with a home game, were also the only road team in the Mountain Region to get a win.

Arizona was paced by junior outside hitter Carolyn Penfield, who recorded a season-high 20 kills. Freshman outside hitter Erin Aldrich added 19 kills.

With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-1 this season in five-game matches, 19-0 when outhitting opponents and 14-1 against unranked teams.

The Toreros (22-8) were led by freshman Petia Yanchulova's 25 kills. Junior outside hitter Lamanda Mounts had 21 kills in the losing effort.

In other action in the Mountain Region of the NCAA Tournament, Colorado defeated Oral Roberts, UA Pacific 10 Conference rival Washington topped Texas Tech and San Diego State defeated Sam Houston State.
