New buildings ready for the first day of classes

Classes will be held for the first time today in the new Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering building at East Speedway Boulevard and North Mountain Avenue.

The newly completed AME building and the Environmental and Natural Resources building at East Sixth Street and North Park Avenue opened during winter break.

The $27.5 million AME building consists of two structures connected by a bridge. The north side will house departmental offices and research laboratories while the south side will house classes.

AME department head Joseph Humphrey said nearly two-thirds of the south side of the building will be used by departments campus-wide.

The $11 million Environmental and Natural Resources Building will not only house departmental offices but is also the new home of the National Weather Service and the U.S. Geological Survey, said Melissa Dryden, public information coordinator for Facilities Design and Construction.
