Police Beat

A baseball hit the windshield of a woman's vehicle Thursday as she passed Frank Sancet Field on East Sixth Street, university police reports stated.

The woman was driving westbound on Sixth Street at about 4:15 p.m. when a ball from the field struck her 1988 Isuzu Trooper.

The woman told police she could not avoid the ball because "it happened too fast."

The value of the damage was unknown.

An Arizona State Museum employee reported several items missing from her husband's car parked in the Park Avenue Garage, 1140 N. Park Ave., Wednesday.

The woman told university police she parked the 1993 Mazda MX6 Sunday at 1:15 p.m. with the doors unlocked. When she returned to her car at 1:50 p.m. she did not notice anything out of place or missing, police reports stated.

The woman's husband noticed Tuesday that a sport gym bag, two tennis rackets, swimming equipment and miscellaneous vehicle documents were missing from the car.

According to police reports, the items were missing from the trunk and glove compartment. The woman told police the trunk is accessible from a trunk-release lever by the front seat.

The sport gym bag was valued at $60. The two tennis rackets had a total value of $150. The swimming equipment and miscellaneous vehicle documents were of unknown value.

University police confiscated seven surveys from a magazine marketing company representative in front of the UA Associated Students Bookstore, 1209 E. University Blvd., Wednesday after having concerns about the release of students' personal information.

Officers talked to the representative after discovering the survey was asking students personal questions and obtaining phone numbers.

The representative told police he was doing a survey on what students do and was recruiting students to work during the summer.

According to reports, he told police he had approval from the dean of students to conduct the survey.

Officers told the man they would keep the surveys until they could check with the dean of students.

Police spoke with the dean about the survey because it was linked to magazine sales and was obtaining personal information. Police advised the dean that there have been prior problems with magazine sales and harassing phone call to students.

The dean told police she also was concerned and would control these situations better, thought it is not illegal to conduct "purposeful" surveys on campus, police reports stated.

The dean said she would advise the representative to schedule time in the Memorial Student Union to conduct surveys. Police gave the seven surveys to the dean of students.

University police stopped a man, a woman and a male juvenile Wednesday after suspecting them of vandalism.

Officers observed the three walking around houses in the area of North Highland Avenue and East Mabel Street. Police reports stated that the people stopped and looked where the officer's vehicle was.

According to police reports, there is a large amount of graffiti in the area of Highland Avenue and Mabel Street and along East Helen Street between North Cherry Avenue and North Mountain Avenue.

Officers stopped the three because of their "suspicious activity," police reports stated.

The man had a large gold marker in his possession while the juvenile had four other markers, police reports stated. According to the reports, both the man and the juvenile told police they belonged to the tagging group "Stone-4-Life." The man told police he had written graffiti before.

Police took photos of all three people to refer to in case of future incidents involving graffiti.

A female student reported a license plate missing from her car parked in the Second Street Garage, 1340 E. Second St.

According to police reports, the front plate was not taken.

The value of the plate was unknown.
