Faculty Senate members discuss business at their Dec. 2 meeting. The Faculty Senate is now seeking nominations for 28 positions, including chair of the faculty.

The Faculty Senate is accepting nominations for the chair of the faculty, five seats on the Committee of Eleven, 20 senators-at-large and two seats on the Budget and Strategic Planning Committee.

The seats are renewed every two years in May, but the application process begins in January to allow time for the faculty to prepare nomination forms, said Pamela Bridgmon, administrative secretary in the Office of Academic Affairs.

John Schwarz, Faculty Senate chairman, described the Senate as a valuable tool in developing university policies.

However, he is "uncertain" whether he will seek re-election.

Although the body is called the Faculty Senate, students and administrators also hold senate seats. However, student senators are appointed to year-long terms by the Associated Students rather than being chosen in the general election.

Nomination petitions are available in the following locations:

  • Forbes Building Room 306

  • College of Law Room 209

  • Main Library Room A349

  • College of Medicine Room 2206

  • Gould-Simpson Building Room 208

  • Modern Languages Room 345

Prospective senators must collect at least 20 signatures, and candidates for chair of the faculty need 40 signatures. Signatures should be delivered by Feb. 11 to the Faculty Center, 1400 E. Mabel St.

Candidates must also submit a short paragraph describing their reasons for seeking the position and outlining issues they consider critical for faculty consideration, a news release stated.
