Laxcats trounced by top team

The Arizona Laxcats felt the wrath of the No. 1 team in the USILA polls, the Brigham Young Cougars, as they were defeated 23-7 in Provo, Utah, Friday night after a horrendous day of travel.

Arizona coaches and players had to wake up at 4:30 a.m., drive to Phoenix, fly to Las Vegas, continue on to Salt Lake City, drive to Provo, Utah, get an hour or two of sleep, then get dressed and go onto the field to play.

"I felt we just weren't ready to play the game. Our heads were still on the plane," freshman midfielder Nate Schmidt said.

But in sports, excuses don't count for much when you lose.

"I don't want to make excuses, we just got our butts kicked and that is what I told the players," Laxcat head coach Mickey-Miles Felton said.

Despite 18 saves from sophomore goalie Cameron Gingras and three goals and an assist from senior midfielder Max Webber, the Laxcats were never a contender in the contest.

"Even though we never threatened in the game we never gave up and that was encouraging," Felton said. "We just didn't play the disciplined ball that we need to play against teams that are outmanning us."

BYU junior attackman Matt Davis stunned the UA by pouring in five goals and dishing out four assists in the game.

"We definitely have a goal which is to see them again and the only way we are going to do that is if we get back to St. Louis for the final four," Schmidt said.

The Laxcats have been outscored by the Cougars 45-15 in their last two games, dating back to the national semifinals in St. Louis last year where they lost 22-8.
