Women's lacrosse clinches league title

For the second year in a row the Arizona women's lacrosse team has clinched a first round bye in the playoffs.

Only this year the Wildcats are also the No. 1 seed as they clinched the Western Lacrosse League regular season title with a perfect 8-0 league record.

"I think we're the team to beat," UA senior midfielder Jessica Deal said. "We're just flying right now."

Arizona won an early Sunday morning game against Cal-Poly San Luis Obispo 11-7.

"Considering how many people were out and how many games we've played I was happy with our performance," head coach Josh Dreiband said.

Arizona was missing five players due to school-related or financial issues.

Deal picked up the slack, scoring four goals to lead Arizona in the win. Attacker Erin Bradbury added three of her own.

"Our transition game was really good," Deal said. "And our defense stepped it up despite having people out."

Arizona ends its regular season Saturday against UCLA. And after a week off, the Wildcats will host a second round playoff game in Tucson.

Arizona lost two of three games in Saturday's tournament, falling to UC-Davis 6-2 and California 2-1. They bounced back to beat Colorado 6-5 in the final game.
