Baseball team crushed in final two games at UCLA

From Staff Reports

The Arizona baseball team struggled on the road again, losing twice over the weekend to UCLA.

Saturday night's game was rained out, forcing the teams to play yesterday. The Wildcats (27-18 overall, 8-13 Pacific 10 Conference Southern Division) lost 12-7 and were also defeated 15-7 Friday.

Wildcat pitcher/designated hitter Rob Shabansky, playing for the first time since injuring his elbow against California in late February, hit a two-run homer for Arizona in yesterday's loss.

Shabansky did not pitch in the series, though.

Arizona pitchers gave up 12 walks in the game, including seven by starter Tony Milo (7-3). Milo gave up seven runs, all earned, on four hits over 5 1/3 innings pitched.

Right-hander Darrell Hussman came in after Milo and promptly gave up two walks without getting an out and surrendering two runs of his own.

Closer Ryan Moskau then gave up the final three runs on three walks and four hits.

Bobby Roe (4-2) picked up the win for the Bruins in relief of former Sabino (Tucson) High School pitcher Chad Cislak.

Bruin center fielder Eric Valent hit his 19th home run of the year, a two-run shot, and designated hitter Bill Scott also hit a two-run homer. UCLA third baseman Aldo Pinto added the third two-run homer of the day, his second of the year.

Arizona's lone stars were catcher Greg Clark, who was 2 for 5 with two RBI, and shortstop Keoni DeRenne, who was 2 for 5 with one RBI.

Arizona heads up to Phoenix tomorrow night to play Grand Canyon in a non-conference game. The Wildcats' final Six-Pac homestand of the year starts Friday against No. 1 Stanford.
