Inconsistent play dooms UA men's golf

The UA men's golf team had a rough time this week at the Pacific 10 Men's Golf Championships held at the Orinda Country Club in Orinda, Calif.

The Wildcats managed to hold on to third place by shooting a nine-over par 369 in the final round, and 19-over par 1459 for the tournament.

This score left them 15 strokes behind the winner, defending champion Arizona State, who shot a combined 13-under par for its final two rounds to end up at four-over par 1444 for the tournament. This is the fourth consecutive year that Arizona State has won the Pacific 10 Conference Championship.

UCLA finished second by shooting a blistering five-under par 355 in the final round, and 15-over par 1455 for the tournament.

California, the tournament leader for the first three rounds ended up in fourth place after shooting an 18-over par 378 in the final round. California finished at 21-over par 1461 for the tournament.

Rounding out the top five was Washington, who shot a seven-over par 367 on the final day and 36-over par 1476 for the tournament.

In the individual competition, the top Wildcat finisher was senior Rory Sabbatini. Sabbatini rebounded from poor play in round three to shoot one-under par 71 on the final day of competition. This placed Sabbatini in a tie for sixth place at one-over par 289 for the tournament.

Sophomore Derek Gillespie and freshman Tim Weiss finished in a three-way tie for 15th place at five-over par 293. Gillespie shot a four-over par 76 in the final round, while Weiss fired an even-par 72.

The final Wildcat finisher was junior Aaron Friedman. Friedman finished in a three-way tie for 49th place at 16-over par 304. Friedman shot a five-over par 77 on the final day of play.
