MEChA plans Chicano dorm, community center

Chicano student activists unveiled plans Friday for a new Chicano residence hall and community center on the UA campus.

Josué Limón, president of the UA chapter of Movimiento Estudiantíl de Chicanos de Atzlán, said his group plans to take over the former Beal Student Center, 1030 N. Mountain Ave., at First Street.

He added MEChA is still negotiating with Long Realty Co. over final details, adding there will be a meeting within the next two weeks to act on the project idea.

He said that the center will be a direct connection with the Chicano community, something to give younger people more exposure to the UA.

"We hope it will be interpreted as something that we have done for ourselves," he said. "It will be something achieved by our efforts. It'll be our place."
