Smith returns to lineup with mild success

Arizona sophomore Keith Smith got significant playing time Saturday night, but last year's standout quarterback saw most of his action away from the play calling slot.

He completed his only pass attempt for 31 yards, rushed two times for six yards, and caught a pair of passes for a total of 17 yards.

The Wildcats started the game slowly, forcing Arizona head coach Dick Tomey to make some changes.

"That is why we put Keith in," Tomey said. "If you look at tape, Cal started slow against these guys (Oregon State). Washington did it too. We needed Keith to come in and give us the spark we were looking for."

Smith has struggled to become accustomed to his new role, but would rather be on the field in any capacity than not.

"It has been hard getting used to it (playing wide receiver) because I am still not sure about some of the routes," Smith said. "But I am happy to be out there running around the field."

Current starting quarterback Ortege Jenkins, who has been outstanding since replacing Smith when he went down with an shoulder injury in the UCLA game on Sept. 27, knows the importance of having his fellow signal caller in the lineup.

"Keith has so much talent we can use to help us," Jenkins said. "We have got to be able to use that talent one way or another."

Jenkins will remain the starting quarterback, but Wildcat fans can expect to see more and more of Smith in the final two games of the season.

"He is such a value to our team," Tomey said. "We feel like we need to use him at wide receiver and quarterback, and that is what we are going to do."

With the season winding down, Smith wants nothing more than to contribute to his team's success.

"We want to take the last games of the season one at a time," Smith said. "I want to help the team out however I can. I do not want to be sitting on the sidelines."
