The UA women's basketball team received some recognition that was long overdue in Friday's preseason Associated Press basketball poll.

The Wildcats, coming off a 23-8 season and with a team that returns six letter winners, collected 368 votes and the No. 15 ranking. It's the first time in school history that the women's team has been recognized on any AP polls.

"I think we are approaching things the same way," said head coach Joan Bonvicini, who in six years is the winningest coach in UA history. "It's just nationally we show up more. It's great for the university and the team. This team should be ranked."

In last week's Pacific 10 Conference poll Arizona was projected to finish second to Stanford, receiving 145 votes from media who cover the Pac-10.

"We just have to continue to play hard," Bonvicini said. "With the ranking you have to prove yourself every night because teams start coming after you. I think there is a lot of talent in the conference. There is no gimme games."

If you would like to catch the Wildcats in their debut game as a nationally ranked team, tonight is your first chance.

Arizona hosts the Kilsyth Cobras, a club team from Australia, at 7 p.m. in McKale Center.

The Cobras are coming off a 69-67 loss at the hands of ASU in their third game of a 10-game, 13-day swing through the West coast.

Tickets are $3 for UA faculty and staff, youth and senior citizens, $4 for general admission.

Wildcat club soccer teams that will represent Arizona at the two 16-team national championship tournaments in Phoenix on Nov. 20-22.

The women's and men's club soccer teams both became regional champions over the weekend in Las Crucas, NM. The women beat New Mexico State 2-0 in the final while the men outlasted UTEP 4-1 in its championship game.
