Police Beat

Wildcat Pizza, 1720 E. Speedway Blvd., had to close three hours early Thursday night after university police discovered the store's manager had a warrant for his arrest.

About 11 p.m., university police were in the alley behind Delta Chi Fraternity, 1701 E. First St., when an officer saw Daniel Tarango drinking a beer, police reports stated.

Tarango told university police place he was taking a break from work and checking out the fraternity party.

Police told him that by being in the alley, he was drinking in public.

Police then discovered Tarango had a warrant for his arrest for failure to appear in court on a suspended driver's license charge.

Tarango was placed under arrest but allowed a few minutes to collect money from the pizza delivery drivers and to lock up the business.

He was taken to Pima County Jail and released by Pretrial Services after posting a $592 bond.

In an unrelated incident, university police were in the same alley Thursday when an officer heard what he believed to be a fight at Delta Chi Fraternity, 1701 E. First St.

When the officer approached the party, one man went into the house and another man ran away.

Members of the fraternity told police that an altercation had not occurred; however, one male student reported he might have been hit in the face by another man, but could not exactly remember what happened, police reports stated.

A UA employee reported Friday that he believed someone may have been sleeping on top of the Emil W. Haury Building, 1009 E. South Campus Drive, because he found vomit in the stairwell that leads to the roof access.

The employee told university police he was concerned because the vomit, which was found about 9:30 a.m. on the building's fourth floor southeast stairwell, went under the door that leads to the roof. He said the door is near his office and cannot be secured.

The man told police he would contact Facilities Management to request a lock be installed on the door.

A 19-year-old student reported Friday he " has no idea" who broke his $10 cable lock and stole his $900 mountain bike from the west side of Old Main, 1200 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police his yellow and orange GT Ricochet mountain bike with Rock Shocks was taken between 8:50 and 10 a.m.

A student reported the theft of her Honda motor scooter Friday from the parking lot near North Campus Drive and North Park Avenue.

The student told university police she parked the blue scooter, which has a white basket on the front, in lot #6240, on the north side of North Campus Drive just east of North Park Avenue, at 1 p.m. and returned at 2 p.m. to find it missing.

The student told police she did not know how the scooter was taken because she still has the keys. She said the basket on the front should make it easy to identify.

An 18-year-old student was referred to the UA diversion program Friday after he was unable to tell university police the ZIP code on his alleged driver's license.

University police were near 910 E. Fifth St. at 9:09 p.m. when an officer saw Ryan Johnson carrying an 18-pack of Miller beer and a 20-ounce bottle of Rolling Rock, police reports stated.

Police suspected Johnson was underage and asked for his identification. Johnson handed police a ID that indicated he was over 21, but when police asked him to recite the information on the card, he was unable to tell the officer the ZIP code.

Johnson then admitted it was a fake and that he was only 18. Police had him dump out the beer, and referred him to the UA diversion program for a minor in possession of alcohol violation.

He was warned for giving false information to a police officer and having a false ID.

Police then escorted Johnson to Coronado Residence Hall, 822 E. Fifth St., to verify his identity.

A 19-year-old student reported two credit cards were taken from his wallet Friday while at CatFest '97 on the UA Mall, 1303 E. University Blvd.

The student told university police he was in the crowd at 10:40 p.m. when he realized his wallet was missing.

After searching through the crowd, a female student handed him the wallet but the credit cards were gone.
