Police Beat

A university bike security officer was assaulted Aug. 27 while riding on East University Boulevard near North Cherry Avenue.

The security officer told university police he was heading east about 7:50 p.m. when a man on a blue mountain bike rode up next to him and grabbed his shirt, pulling him to the ground. The man then fled into the Sam Hughes neighborhood.

The officer suffered minor cuts and scrapes. The bike's handlebar was bent and the chain was broken.

The assailant is described as 6-feet tall and 200 pounds. He was wearing black shorts, a T-shirt and a white helmet.


Two 18-year-old freshmen were referred to the UA diversion program Friday after university police saw them drinking beer near North Vine Avenue and East Helen Street.

Police were in the area at 12:43 a.m. when they noticed Scott Yamano, a Coronado Hall resident, 822 E. Fifth St., and Geoffrey Alcorn, a Yavapai Hall resident, 1222 E. South Campus Drive, both drinking beer.

The students told university police they got the beer at a fraternity party on North Vine Avenue and admitted to drinking four to five beers that night., police reports stated

Both were referred to the diversion program on minor in possession of alcohol charges.


Another student was arrested on alcohol charges Friday after initiating a short foot chase with university police near East First Street and North Cherry Avenue.

Police were heading north on North Cherry Avenue at 1:22 a.m. when an officer saw Skler Bedenoch, 19, drinking a Keystone beer. Reports stated that when police asked what he was drinking, he replied, " Beer, do you want some?" When police asked for identification he reportedly said, " Fuck that" and took off running, police reports stated.

After about 50 feet, Bedenoch stopped and put his hands up, police reports stated. Police handcuffed Bedenoch and removed his ID from his wallet.

He was cited on charges of drinking in public and minor in possession of alcohol and released at the scene.


An 18-year-old student was arrested on four charges early Saturday morning after a fight broke out at StarMart, 501 N. Park Ave., apparently over campus territory issues.

A university police employee was at the store about 1:39 a.m. when she saw Jeffrey Rosenbloom punch a passenger of a Jeep Wrangler in the parking lot and then kick the right side of the vehicle, reports stated. She reported the incident to university police.

The passenger, a 21-year-old student, told police he then got out of the Jeep and threw a punch at Rosenbloom, a resident of Coronado Hall.

He told police the fight started after he went to the store and several individuals said, " What the fuck man; this is dorm territory," reports stated.

The student was bleeding on his right middle knuckle and had a bruised jaw but refused medical attention, reports stated.

The student said he did not want to press assault charges. However, the Jeep's driver said he wanted to press criminal damage charges for the dent on his jeep.

After the men identified Rosenbloom as the alleged attacker, Police stopped him in the alley behind Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall, 910 E. Fifth St.

Rosenbloom was cited on charges of criminal damage, possession of a fictitious license, minor consuming spirituous liquor and disorderly conduct.


A 17-year-old boy was arrested Sunday on DUI and reckless driving charges after reportedly making two high speed passes in front of UAPD headquarters, 1200 E. Lowell St.

A university police officer was in the headquarters' parking lot about 6 a.m. when a speeding yellow mustang made a right turn onto Lowell Street from North Santa Rita Avenue, screeching its tires.

According to reports, the officer had seen the same car pass by a few minutes earlier.

The officer followed the car, which ran a stop sign, to East Fourth Street and North Highland Avenue, where the driver stopped in the middle of the road and spoke to two pedestrians.

The youth told university police he had been drinking earlier that evening.

He was arrested based on his field sobriety test performance and driving behavior. The youth reportedly had a blood alcohol content of .082 percent.

He was charged with reckless driving, and minor operating a motor vehicle with liquor in the body.

The youth was released from UAPD headquarters to a cab company at 7 a.m.
