Associated Press UA sophomore guard Mike Bibby (10) along with Stanford's Peter Sauer (5) and Mark Seaton (44) struggle for a rebound during Arizona's win last night at the Maples Pavilion. The sixth ranked Wildcats dominated the fourth ranked Cardinal, 93-75.

PALO ALTO, Calif. - Although he claimed to not hear the taunts, Mike Bibby sure reacted to them like a man trying to send a message.

Enduring chants of 'your dad hates you' from the always-raucous Stanford student section at Maples Pavilion, Bibby went off and got his hits in the form of dead-eye jumpers that led to 26 points in lifting sixth-ranked Arizona over fourth-ranked Stanford 93-75 last night.

"I didn't hear them," said Bibby, whose estranged father is Southern Cal coach Henry Bibby.

So what exactly did Bibby hear?

"I heard them quiet down," he said.

Bibby had the kind of take-charge night Arizona needed him to have. He seemed to have an answer for every big shot the Cardinal hit in the second half.

"He was laughing at (the crowd) every time he made a shot," Arizona forward Eugene Edgerson said.

"Anyone who wonders how good (Bibby) is, just look at the stats," Arizona head coach Lute Olson said.

OK. To go along with his 26 points, Bibby tallied 10 assists, four steals and rebounds in a one-turnover performance.

"He's obviously something special," Olson said.

Not to be overshadowed was Dickerson, whose shot seemed just as unconscious as Bibby's.

"It seems like they shot 90 percent," Stanford guard Arthur Lee said.

UA's senior forward finished with 26 points on 12 for 16 shooting and added eight rebounds.

"The offense with Michael Dickerson and Mike Bibby and A.J. (Bramlett's) inside presence was just unbelievable," Arizona captain Miles Simon said. "Tonight, we put it all together."

And they did so at the perfect time. The Cardinal was 18-0 entering the game and riding a wave of confidence after equaling its best Pacific 10 Conference start in school history at 7-0 with Sunday's victory over Washington. Now, Utah is the nation's only undefeated men's team.

The Wildcats (18-3, 8-0) came at the Cardinal from every angle. They did it with defense, holding Stanford to 39 percent shooting from the floor.

And, of course, they did it with offense, shooting 60 percent in the second half and 57 percent for the game.

"Arizona showed you how good they could be tonight," Stanford coach Mike Montgomery said. "(I'm) not sure what more we could do. That's as well as I've seen an Arizona team play, maybe, ever."

The Wildcats started the game on a 6-0 run before both teams settled into a rhythm. The teams matched shot for shot for most of the first half. And the Cardinal held the lead just once - 32-31 at 5:13 - but that was gone in seconds and Arizona went into the locker room at halftime with a 46-43 lead.

The talk in Tucson all week was Arizona needing a big game from A.J. Bramlett against Cardinal center Tim Young.

Arizona got it. Perhaps more important than Bramlett's 12 points and four rebounds was the fact that he got Young to commit his fourth foul just two minutes into the second half.

It was from then on that the game was all UA and the 500 or so Wildcat fans among the sellout crowd of 7,391 began to get louder and louder.

The Cardinal went down 11 on a three-pointer by - who else? - Bibby with 14:12 to play. Stanford never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

"We're looking for a Pac-10 title," Simon said. "To get this (win) and Stanford having to play at Arizona and UCLA, that's big for us."

Simon had an off night, converting on just 5 of 14 shots, but with Bibby and Dickerson shooting the way they were, it was not the problem it could have been in a game of this magnitude.

Peter Sauer led the Cardinal with 23 points and seven rebounds.

"I have no problem that the first loss was to the defending national champions," Sauer said. "I'm a little disappointed it happened it home, though. We should win these games."
