Sidelines

The UA volleyball team didn't have quite as much success on signing day as the football team.

Less than half of the Wildcats' verbal commitments were able to send their letters to head coach Dave Rubio due to technical difficulties.

"It's not going to happen tonight," Rubio said.

"The fax machine was broken all day and we didn't find out until about 2:00. We tried to get another number but that took a while. A lot of them are just going to send (their letters) in tomorrow."

The volleyball team was expecting to receive seven letters. At 6 p.m. last night, however, Rubio and co. only had three.

Shamrock Farms announced it would donate 50 cents to the UA Athletic Department's Wildcat Scholarship Fund for every half-gallon of Wildcat Crunch ice cream purchased between Jan. 15 and Jan. 31.

Well, 3,690 half-gallons were sold statewide during that period for a grand total of $1,845. The company will present an oversized check to the athletic department at noon today at the softball team's Lead-Off Luncheon.

The dessert served at the luncheon...you guessed it, Wildcat Crunch ice cream.

Briefly

Injury update...

UA diver Andrea Glass is currently undergoing rehabilitation on her shoulder.

The junior, who had to enjoy her turkey dinner with her arm in a sling, underwent shoulder surgery over the Thanksgiving holiday to repair a torn ligament.

After two months of therapy for almost two hours every day, Glass is anxious to return to diving.

It seems Glass does not have any problems staying motivated. In fact she did not even let this interview interrupt her cardiovascular work-out as she explained the details of her operation while cross-country skiing in place on a cross-trainer.

By the Numbers

6:

The number of times Arizona and New Mexico have faced off this 1997-98 season and the number of times Arizona has defeated a Lobo team.

UA victories include swimming and diving on Nov. 7; football on Dec. 27; men's basketball on Jan. 18; and baseball's three game sweep on Jan. 30, 31, and Feb. 1.
