To the editor,

On Wednesday, Sept. 16, M.E.Ch.A sponsored an event on the mall. A local band volunteered its services to perform at the event.

One of the songs in the group's set contained some racist and highly objectionable lyrics. The last song in the set was entitled "Kill All White Men," and contained that phrase in the lyrics as well as lyrics about other ethnic groups.

We did not know beforehand that this song was going to be sung. We were just as surprised as others when we heard the lyrics.

The sentiments in these objectionable lyrics do not in any way, shape or form reflect M.E.Ch.A's beliefs, philosophy or ideology and we hereby disavow them.

M.E.Ch.A is not about killing all the white, black, Asian, Native American or Chicano people. It is about working together to make sure that our voices are heard and acted upon.

The intention of the event was not to affront anyone, rather to educate and entertain.

The purpose of this institution and any institution of higher learning is to foster intelligent and critical thinking about past and present issues.

We apologize if these expectations were not met and offense was taken.

If you have any further comments and/or would like to find out more of what M.E.Ch.A truly is, we encourage you to attend a M.E.Ch.A meeting every Tuesday at 5 p.m. at the Chicano/Hispano Resource Center, Economics 211D.
