Oregon's junior college transfer tailback Reuben Droughns not only had three fumbles in the overtime 41-38 loss to UCLA, he also broke his right leg, knocking him out for the rest of the season.

It appeared he had just sprained his ankle in the third quarter as he kept playing, rushing for 172 yards and a touchdown. But X-rays Sunday showed he broke his right fibula in addition to some ligament damage in his ankle.

Droughns, in only five games this season, rushed for 824 yards and nine touchdowns. That ranked him 11th on Oregon's single season rushing list.

The Ducks will likely also be without senior tailback Kevin Parker this week as he too went down with an injury in the UCLA game, spraining his right ankle.

Oregon, which is ranked eighth in the nation with 240.8 rushing yards per game, will be left with juniors Derien Latimer and Jerry Brown and sophomore Jason Cooper in the backfield for their game Saturday at home against Southern Cal.

UCLA pulled out a victory in a wild overtime game at the Rose Bowl against Oregon thanks to senior quarterback Cade McNown and senior linebacker Brendon Ayan-badejo. They were named the offensive and defensive players of the week in the Pacific 10 Conference for their efforts.

Washington kicker/return man Joe Jarzynka was honored with the special teams award for his play in UW's 21-13 victory over California.

McNown, a leading Heis-man Trophy candidate this season, completed 20 of 36 passes for a season-high 395 yards and three touch-downs while helping UCLA squeak out their 15th victory in a row. The Bruins totaled 547 yards of total offense on the day.

Ayanbadejo sacked Oregon quarterback Akili Smith on two consecutive plays in overtime, pushing the Ducks out of field goal range. He had eight tackles, six unassisted, three passes broken up and the pair of sacks.

Jarzynka set a Pac-10 record for punt return yards with 166 on seven returns, including a 91-yard return for a touchdown. He also went 3 of 3 on extra point attempts as Washington's place-kicker.

Also nominated for the award on offense were USC wide receiver R. Jay Soward and Arizona running back Leon Callen. For defense, linemen Jabari Issa from Washington and Mike Rob-ertson from Arizona as well as linebacker Chris Claiborne of USC earned nominations.

Pac-10 Heisman Watch

As the season moved past the halfway point, our list has also been cut in half. Here are the remaining candidates.

Cade McNown, UCLA:

Pulled out a thriller in overtime against the Oregon Ducks by going 20 of 36 for 395 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. He has led UCLA to 15 straight victories dating back to the 66-3 blowout victory over Texas last season. For the season McNown is 81 of 149 for 1,425 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions. McNown and the Bruins travel north to Berkeley to take on Cal this Saturday.

Akili Smith, Oregon:

The entire nation should now know who this standout quarterback from Oregon is as he went 15 of 37 for 221 yards while throwing three touchdowns and an inter-ception on national television. Smith's numbers are better than McNown's this year as he is 88 of 157 for 1,689 and 18 touchdowns. He also has only four interceptions. He is going to try and get a victory at home against USC this week before the Ducks travel to Tucson to take on Arizona on Halloween.

Wildcat projected leader

It is a tie, so we have to split the award in half. But McNown receives the arm with the ball because he won the game and is still undefeated.
