Don't hide behind genetics

To the editor,

We live in a time where society is being strained. Why? Because the voice of the people is being silenced by the voice of groups of people that push the demoralization of our society in the false name of freedom. These people disguise themselves as a "minority" and if someone speaks against their way of life they stigmatize them as "prejudice." I speak primarily to those that practice and/or spread homosexuality. I would also address with them all others that sleep around.

As Nick Ray said, the USA is a patchwork of diversities and cultures, but in practicing these immoral acts, you don't add patches or stitches to the quilt, but rather cut holes in it. For your own pleasure you sell our nation's morals, values, and integrity.

Homosexuality and sleeping around are lifestyles, not fates; a person is not a homosexual, but rather lives a homosexual lifestyle. It is pathetic when people try to hide behind genetics as the "make-all" and "do-all" behind their actions. Any good geneticist will tell you that genetics are only one rung in a tall ladder that makes us who we are. Another rung on that ladder is your own choices.

Now, my call to you who choose to do these things is not one of condemnation, but a hope that you will realize what you are doing to us all. I wish for you to start taking responsibility for the damages that you inflict on our society. For example, those of you practicing homosexuality and those sleeping around are hiding, incubating, and spreading many diseases through our society. Some are curable, but others are incurable and deadly. You risk your lives, but that's not all; these practices infect those you have relations with; and worse yet hurts the innocent.

For those of you that are against those actions, however, I must say that you can be more intelligent than to resort to violence. The Matthew Shepherd incident need not be repeated. We should be above the beasts that kill to get their way. Violence and intolerance is unacceptable. Our brothers and sisters have the freedom to live their lives the way they choose and we are accountable for our own actions.

For those of you who live these lifestyles, remember that you control your actions and just as you have the freedom to live that way, you have the ability and freedom to break away. Just think of the rest of us when you make your choices, because we are a part of this society too.
