All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones

(Virgin)

Most people who remember Whale think of their single "Hobo Humping Slobo Babe," and the video which featured Cia, the band's lead vocalist, being tossed up in the air by her bandmates.

What Whale has done in the interim between albums is to take a new spin on the tired trip-hop genre, passing along a reminder that this is music that couldn't have happened without hip-hop coming first. Rapper Cream appears on a couple of tracks, adding a sly groove into the mix, and sampling is masterfully used, including a bit from Neneh Cherry's "Buffalo Stance" on the album's driving song, "Crying At Airports."

The sassy rock of Whale's earlier sound is still in effect as well, especially on a track like "Deliver The Juice," and the heavy guitars and shouting slip back in every now and then, keeping the sound diverse and unpredictable, without losing appeal.

All Disco Dance Must End In Broken Bones is one of those perfect discs that you can listen to any time you want to get a groove on and keep it going.

And with it, the band, which is hitting the road with old friend and collaborator Tricky, has proved once again that it's still crescent fresh.
