University of Arizona police responded to a call at Gentle Ben's Brewing Co., 865 E. University Blvd., Thursday after one of the restaurant's bouncers reported a man attempted to steal bicycles near the restaurant, police reports stated. The officer was stopped at North Park Avenue and East University Boulevard when the bouncer ran to the car window and pointed at another man near the intersection, reports stated. The bouncer told the officer he and several other Gentle Ben's employees had just chased the man, reports stated. The bouncer said the man cut the cable locks to two bikes with bolt cutters, reports stated. The bouncer added the man wore a red shirt but must have tossed it. UAPD dispatch reported receiving a call from Marriott University Park, 880 E. Second St., about the incident when the officer requested an additional unit for assistance. The officer followed the man westbound on University and saw the man look into the windows of Campus Athletic, 936 E. University Blvd., reports stated. The man became defensive when the officer asked to speak with him and to have a seat on the bench, reports stated. The officer noticed a strong odor of liquor coming from the man's breath, reports stated. The man said he came from the downtown area through Fourth Avenue, reports stated. He then went to a friend's house and watched the NCAA basketball game on television and then went for a stroll, reports stated. The man added that he was not near Gentle Ben's earlier, reports stated. Another officer, via the police radio, reported that the witness had positively identified the man, reports stated. The bolt cutters and the red sweater were not found by police, and the man was turned over to Tucson Police Department for processing, reports stated.
Police responded Thursday to Sigma Chi fraternity house, 1616 E. First St., after a student reported his $450 television and VCR unit was stolen, reports stated. The student said his bedroom window was unable to be secured. The student said he left his room at about 2 a.m. and returned at 5 a.m. to find the television stolen, as well as the disc changer, stereo receiver, cordless telephone and 200 compact discs, reports stated. The student said the stereo receiver and CD changer belonged to his roommate. The student said he found the compact disc that was in the CD changer on the coffee table and that it may have finger prints, reports stated. The officer was unable to obtain a usable print from the compact disc, reports stated. The student had no suspect information or serial numbers for the stolen property.
Police spoke with a student over the telephone Thursday after he reported his purple 21-speed mountain bicycle and lock were stolen from the Physics and Atmospheric Sciences building, 1118 E. Fourth St., reports stated. The student said he parked the bike and locked it on the west side of the building on March 10 at 5:15 p.m. He returned at noon the next day to the bike rack and found that his bike, valued at $600, and lock had been stolen, reports stated. The student added he did not see anyone suspicious in the area.
Police responded to a call Thursday after an employee reported an air handler was stolen from the Gould-Simpson building, 1040 E. Fourth St., reports stated. The employee said it was stolen from inside a locked electrical room in the basement of the building, reports stated. He said the air handler, valued at $3,000, was taken between October and December, reports stated.
