College student binge drinking on the rise, Harvard study says

Binge drinking among college students is on the rise - at least according to a Harvard School of Public Health survey released last week. Judging by the definition of "binge drinking" used in the Harvard study, half of UA students may be heavy drinkers as well, according to an informal Arizona Daily Wildcat poll. But UA health officials said such data is unreliable. Of 100 UA students surveyed in the poll, 50 admitted to binge drinking - based on the Harvard study's standards. The Harvard and Wildcat surveys define "binge drinking" as a man having five or more drinks in one sitting and a woman having four or more drinks in one sitting.    [More]

Whistle-blower protection bill closer to passage
[news] Despite the protest of a Tucson legislator, the state House yesterday gave preliminary approval to an amended measure granting protection to university whistle-blowers. "I think the whole thing is just a disaster," Rep. Marion Pickens, D-Tucson, said of the bill. The bill moved forward with a 27-9 vote.    [More]

Baseball team stunned by Grand Canyon
[news] In a perfect world, people like Keoni DeRenne don't make errors. UA's junior shortstop was a preseason All-American and is one of the most efficient defensive players in the Pacific 10 Conference. The world isn't perfect, however. It was DeRenne's error that led to a come-from-behind victory by Division II opponent Grand Canyon yesterday afternoon at Sancet Field.    [More]

Waiting for state help won't solve the UA's problems
[news] The Arizona Board of Regents thinks the UA needs improvement in two areas - advising and graduation rates. According to UA President Peter Likins and Regent Judy Gignac, these faults are here to stay, at least until someone else can fix them. Responding to the 2000 regents' Report Card, Likins and Gignac said that although the UA has had the same problems for years now, the only chance we have for a remedy is through financial help from the Legislature.    [More]

Digital Something: Where's the Trek?
[news] Today is William Shatner's birthday. It's also the year 2000, which lends the geeky (i.e.: writer of this article) to ask why all that neat technology in Star Trek isn't here yet. First of all, there's the phaser. Being that America is so trigger happy, It's mind-boggling that this hasn't been developed yet. For those who don't know, a phaser looks like a gun (or a remote control in the later, less cool series) that fires beams of energy that has two settings, "stun" and "kill."    [More]

Quotable:
'Itās hard to define what progress is. At least nothing disastrous has happened, and that is good news.'

-Baltimore County police spokesman Bill Toohey on the five day hostage standoff in a Baltimore suburb.
