Life might exist on one of Jupiter's moons

If a UA professor's predictions prove true, one of Jupiter's moons - Europa - could be home to the first-ever confirmed extraterrestrial life. And scientists will help confirm his prediction by studying a lake here on planet Earth. Researchers are planning an exploration of Antarctica's Lake Vostok - a lake that was frozen more than 30 million years ago and now sits below two and a half miles of solid ice - which could be key in determining the existence of life on Europa. If life is found in the lake, it could boost scientists' claims that life exists on the moon, because of similar physical arrangements between the lake and Europa, according to University of Arizona planetary sciences professor Richard Greenberg.    [More]

Ophthalmology department studies alternatives to corneal
[news] UA doctors in the department of ophthalmology are working to perfect a better alternative to corneal transplants. Department head Dr. Robert Snyder and Drs. Michael Berman and Robert Tyszko are examining a method known as endothelial transplants. "Endothelial transplant is important because for some people this is the only part of the eye's cornea damaged, like those with a specific disease called Fuch's Endothelial Dystrophy," Tyszko said.    [More]

Defending home
[news]
There is a difference in Lindsey Collins this season, though it isn't noticeable by looking or talking to her. She stills has an intimidating aura every time she steps on the field and still has what teammates on the UA softball team call her "nasty side," but the junior catcher's outlook on life has changed. "Maturity, I guess, I don't get frustrated, I don't talk bad to myself and I am just more focused," Collins said. "Actually, a lot of it had to do with my mom."    [More]

Editorial: Business College screenings misguided
[news] Last week, around two hundred students were told that they weren't good enough to be in the business college. In an attempt to build a reputation for exclusivity, the college has begun to screen candidates before they are allowed upper-division standing. In this, the business college has a reasonable goal: small class sizes. However, there are other ways to reach this end.    [More]

[news] The landscapes of Arizona and its immediate surroundings have become a rich and provocative subject for three photographers who have been widely published in Arizona Highways Magazine. The show, "Arizona Highways: Celebrating the Tradition, The Photography of Ansel Adams, David Muench, and Jack Dykinga" was established between the Phoenix Art Museum, the University of Arizona Center for Creative Photography and Flagstaff's Museum of Northern Arizona to commemorate Arizona Highways Magazine's 75th anniversary.    [More]

Quotable:
'I am a total bad ass. I am the one that talks the most (expletive) on the team towards other players.'
