Talk about this story

University police arrested four UA students Saturday after the men conspired to steal beer from a campus-area convenience store, police reports stated.

An officer was coming out of McClelland Hall, 1130 E. Helen St., and noticed a man, later identified as John Ritchie, 20, of the 1800 block of East Blacklidge Street, running toward a car with two items in his hand at about 2:15 a.m., reports stated.

The officer got in his car and followed because of the suspicious nature of the man running and pulled the car over at North Fremont Avenue and East Mable Street, reports stated.

The officer spoke with Ritchie and three other men in the car, Thomas Pender, 21 of the 400 block of East University Boulevard, Graham Jones, 19, of the 400 block of East University Boulevard, and Dan Chase, 20, of the 1800 block of East Blacklidge Street, and noticed the men all had the smell of alcohol on their breath, reports stated.

He asked Ritchie if the two six-packs of Hefeweizen beer he had in his possession were stolen from the 7-11 store at 1001 E. Speedway Blvd. and he said he did take the beer, reports stated.

Another officer went to the 7-11 to speak with possible witnesses about the incident, reports stated.

An employee of the 7-11 told the officer that he was outside the store when Ritchie approached him and offered to give him money for beer in the store, reports stated.

The employee said he told Ritchie that he wouldn't do it and he went back inside the store, reports stated.

He said he then saw Ritchie running away from the store with the two six-packs, reports stated.

The officer speaking to the men in the car asked them for identification and they all provided driver licenses, reports stated.

As the officer spoke with them, he noticed a Whatchamacallit candy bar and two packs of gum near the beer, reports stated.

Ritchie said he took those items from the 7-11 as well and that he wouldn't have taken the beer if it hadn't been past 1 a.m., reports stated.

The officer went to the 1986 Toyota Forerunner the men were riding in to retrieve the beer to return to the 7-11 when he noticed the gum and candybar were missing, reports stated.

The officer asked Ritchie if he had the candy and Ritchie said, "I can't keep these? I thought I'd try," reports stated.

Ritchie was cited on suspicion of shoplifting and minor in possession of alcohol; Pender was cited on suspicion of conspiring to shoplift, and Chase and Jones were cited on suspicion of minor in possession of alcohol and conspiring to shoplift, reports stated.

They were released at the scene.

A UA employee called UAPD Friday after someone stole items from a laboratory room in a UA building, reports stated.

The employee said he put seven scales in two different rooms in the Physics-Atmospheric Sciences building, 1118 E. Fourth St., on April 12 at about 10 a.m. and they were noticed missing at about noon last Tuesday, reports stated.

He said the scales are usually kept in another room on another floor of the building, but they were to be used by students and faculty during the week so the employee put them in the rooms, reports stated.

There was no damage or further thefts from either room and there was no evidence left in the rooms, reports stated.

Police spoke with a construction company employee working on the Integrated Learning Center after the man found a tree uprooted and thrown into the pit on the east end of the UA mall, reports stated.

The employee said the tree was planted near the Main Library, 1510 E. University Blvd., after construction work damaged the original and someone pulled the young plant from its spot in the ground and tossed it in the fenced construction area between 5 p.m. Thursday and 6 a.m. Friday, reports stated.

The employee said the tree valued between an estimated $150 and $250 was damaged beyond replanting and must be replaced, reports stated.

There was no evidence left at the scene, reports stated.

A man called UAPD after someone broke into his car while it was parked on the UA campus and stole items from it, reports stated.

The man parked his car in a lot at 1050 E. Ninth St. at about 11 p.m. Friday and when he returned to it at about 1 a.m. Saturday, his driver window was shattered and items were missing from the car, reports stated.

A compact disc player valued at an estimated $200, cellular phone valued at an estimated $150, two purses, two bank cards, a checkbook and $200 in cash were stolen from the car, reports stated.

There were no fingerprints found at the scene.
