Gallagher Theatre manager to retire in June

For 28 years, Bill Fannin took the students of the University of Arizona out to the movies. But last semester, the storied Gallagher Theatre came to an end, and on June 30, Fannin, long time manager of the film series, will also bid farewell to the UA. "My batteries are drained, I have not really had much time off in the past 28 years, and there are things I want to do," Fannin said. Fannin won't be gone for long however - he will be taking anywhere from six months to a year off to vacation and work on personal projects, and then will return as a volunteer technical advisor for the University Activities Board films committee.    [More]

Managing the weekend warriors
[news] It's late during an intramural softball playoff game between the High Rollers and CNS when the High Rollers' shortstop fields a routine ground ball and attempts to throw the runner out at first base. The ball and the runner arrive at the same time, and the umpire calls the runner safe, setting off protests from the High Rollers. After the play, umpire Dan Williams, a systems engineering junior, listens to the High Rollers' captain and he calmly tells the player the rules and says from where he was standing, the runner was safe.    [More]

Internet notetaking service requires caution
[news] Versity.com, an Internet notetaking service that hires UA students to publish their class notes on the Web, ought only to be used at the discretion of individual professors. On Wednesday, UA student and Versity.com operations manager Luke Denmon inappropriately advertised for the company in Prof. Jim Mitchell's Journalism 208 class. Armed with a megaphone, Denmon entered Mitchell's classroom and encouraged students to get their notes off the Web instead of attending class.    [More]

Former drug addict brings 'Vision Warrior' to UA
[news] Scot Anthony Robinson's drug addictions and homelessness were sources of inspiration for his dramatic lecture-presentation, "Vision Warrior." The University of Arizona was the latest school for Robinson to spread his message about drug and alcohol prevention to today's youth. A nearly packed Harvill room 150 saw his presentation, which addressed life issues, including self-esteem, sex and peer pressure.    [More]
