Talk about this story

The school year has come to an end, and as such, a transition period has passed.

The year 1999 turned into 2000 with portents of ill will for all, but it turned out to be nothing more than hype. So the barrier of the new year was crossed, and with it, change occurred.

At the University of Arizona, people protested, people came and people went. Buildings that have stood for decades came down with a mighty crash - making way for the construction of newer and better buildings.

Change is interesting - though it is never easy - and the students were the ones who lived through it all.

Wildlife asked UA students, "What do you think is the most important thing that happened this school year?"

---

"I think the Drums Across Cultures was pretty good. It shows the diversity of cultures, like how other cultures use drums for communication."

Jessica Nagel

biochemistry and Spanish sophomore

"I think just meeting people, that's what college life is all about ... meeting a lot of people and having a lot of fun. I just think meeting people - that's how you have fun; that's how you get to know what's going on in campus; that's how you get into activities and how you just know what's going on."

Jason Gardner

business freshman

"The thing that happened on Fourth avenue (the stabbing of a gay UA student at the Rainbow Planet Coffee House in February) - that was pretty big. There was people kind of for one side or another. It makes a lot of people very angry. Then, you have people that are kind of like your right-wing people, and your left-wing people, and there's a big controversy going on, not just here, but all over the United States. Gay rights issues are always big."

Lisa Bernal

educational psychology graduate student

"Construction - it's really annoying. It's just completely de-structive, and I haven't seen any con-structive things. I would like to see it end. I'm a freshman here. I came here, it started, and it won't be done until after I graduate, so that's kind of annoying. It will be a long four years."

Retsina Meyer

math, biochemistry, psychology freshman

"What I liked about the campus is on the Mall when they have all the musical things. Those are nice sometimes, except when they have all the church people preach to us. It's been nice for atmosphere. You're walking between classes and you get to hear music - there's always activities going on out there. It gives it a sense of community, as opposed to an individual in this huge place."

Reuben Goodman

computer science freshman

"I guess all the political awareness that goes on - the labor organizations, Students Against Sweatshops, stuff like that. College campuses are supposed to be a place where people are supposed to be political and looking out for injustices."

Kelia Kindred

environmental sciences junior

"Students Against Sweatshops breaking down Likins, actually - that was pretty big. Just to see students get involved and confront the upper management of the university - it's important for students to be aware. It's really nice. It's a good cause. I'm not part of it, but it's always good to see students questioning what's going on and not fall into stigmas. It's a whole bunch of little guys taking on the big guys and winning. I think that's very important."

Trent Tatro

philosophy and mathematics senior

"Well, probably graduation. For me, particularly, that would be the most important thing. Graduating, or completing the semester in good terms, get the grades you are looking for and don't flunk any of them. It's good in terms of academics, I guess."

Jesus Garcia

ecology and evolutionary biology senior

"I would have to say the most important thing by far is the U of A's basketball team. I mean, look at the team, you got Lorne Woods out, Jefferson out. You got Walton coming off a foot injury, and we still excel to the peak potential of the team, and did the best that we could do. Wisconsin knocked us off, but whatever - we'll get them next year."

Matt Fitz-Gerald

communications freshman
