Tomey knows priorities

By Kevin Cunningham
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
September 16, 1999

To the editor,

After reading Monday's letter to the editor from Ken Gafner (Make football exciting), I was shocked at how ignorant a fan can be toward the coaching philosophy of Dick Tomey.

Mr. Gafner wants the team to run up the score on a weaker opponent. Wise up Mr. Gafner, that is not what games against Middle Tennessee State are for. Well, let me correct myself, maybe those games are run up the score massacres for Florida and Florida State. Coach Tomey correctly puts his priorities in getting a win and getting playing time for those who normally don't during the Pac-10 season. That philosophy of treating second and third string players to more reps has worked for Tomey's Wildcats in the past and I suspect it will this season. Blowing out opponents only serves to give your team and your coaching style a black eye in the rest of college football. Remember Mr. Gafner, what goes around comes around and I have not seen a coach run it up on Dick Tomey since Bruce Snyder did it three years ago. Coach Dick Tomey is one of the most respected coaches in the game, by both his peers and players.

Mr. Gafner, by your letter to the editor, your knowledge of the game is clearly shown. If your idea of an exciting college football game is watching a blow out, I suggest you get a satellite dish and watch good ol' FSU hand it to the Citadel or whatever patsy they play that week. I would prefer to watch and cheer for the Wildcats from the opening kickoff to the final gun and knowing that they are being coached by a class act and visionary on the field.
