Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves

By Rebecca Missel

Gospel-singing mall preachers make way for sword swallowers, human cannonballs and fire eaters when the Bindlestiff Family Circus performs a free show at noon today on the UA Mall.

This traveling troupe will demonstrate their rare talents with one show here on campus, and another at 8 p.m. tonight at the Rialto Theatre, 318 E. Congress.

In addition to straitjacket escapist Brian Brushwood and SXIP who plays songs on a tampon applicator, Tucson's own Crawdaddy-O plays their special brand of "alternative brass." The Autonomadic Bookmobile Roadshow will be selling small press publications and a thorough selection of "submersion and perversion," so bring extra cash because they don't accept the CatCard.

The concerts truly offer something for everyone. Bindlestiff began their "bastard child of circus, sideshow, and burlesque" in New York and have brought such uncommon sights as Philomena's Bullwhip Act around the U.S. Crawdaddy-O's musical combination of jazz, hip-hop, Cajun, and swing, which is partly due to the Flying Rosano Brothers, the only set of triplets in any band.

Attendees of the Rialto Theatre's evening show will be transported to the circus nostalgia of Coney Island and P.T. Barnum for only $5, but at the door it will cost $7. Just be sure to leave little Timmy at home, the concert is recommended for mature audiences only.
