Wilbur offers advice

To the editor,

My favorite day of the year is rapidly approaching and I'm going to miss it because I graduated in May! It's the first day of college and no one has a clue what's going on. You can always identify the majority of freshman because they actually shower before they go to class. The women were those moonboots that Neil Armstrong wore on his first mission, and the guys wear their baseball caps with the bill so tightly bent you can hardly push a needle through the opening. Eventually, just like all students, they receive their wake-up call after the results of the first mid-term exams are posted and figure out that college isn't what they expected when they first walked in the door. I don't pretend to be an expert of the real world, but I did become an expert of the college world in my career there and created a list of three principles to help each college student succeed.

1. High school is over. No one cares if you have a boyfriend or girlfriend, or how much your jeans cost. Spend less time being shallow and get to know people that want to be friends with you because of who you are, and not some image you put on. However, if you want to perpetuate high school just a little while longer, you can shell out $2000 bucks and buy yourself some friends north of Second Street and Mountain. Just think of all the fun you'll have when they 'ooh' and 'aah' the car your parents bought you, just like the good 'ol days.

2. Go for the free stuff - How can I stress this one more? Load up on coupon books at the beginning of the semester. Decorate your walls with all the free posters that are handed out. Clothe yourself with the free T-shirts that are given away. In the end you will have learned a valuable life skill that can be used when you graduate and become a carny.

3. Find yourself - Instead of spending time getting all wrapped up in some dumb post-high-school cheesy relationship. Instead, figure out what you really want out of life and where you want to go. You've got the rest of your life to be shackled down when you're married. Be free and have fun.

Bear Down!
