Washington State University senior Nian Taylor, the team's co-captain, was charged with malicious mischief for grabbing his ex-girlfriend and hitting her in the chest. Taylor was sentenced to a year in jail, but the judge suspended 362 days of the original sentence and tacked on two years of probation. Washington State head coach Mike Price punished Taylor by not allowing him access to the weight room for one month this summer.

Five Washington State University football players spent their summers lifting weights and getting arrested.

Junior running back and 1,000-yard rusher Kevin Brown, sophomore wide receiver Jason White, sophomore defensive back Ramin White, and the team's leading wide receiver, senior Nian Taylor, each found themselves in courtrooms this summer.

Brown was convicted of burglary and theft for his part in stealing $1,900 worth of stereo equipment and is currently serving a 30-day jail sentence. He has also been dismissed from the WSU football program, leaving many questions about a Cougar offense that averaged 20.3 points per game last year.

The judge in the case laid down harsh stipulations for Jason White, Ramin White and Brown - 240 hours of community service, 24 months of community supervision during which time they cannot possess any alcohol or contact the victims of the burglary. Perhaps the most damaging to the team's road schedule was when the judge decided that they cannot leave the state.

Taylor, the team's co-captain, was charged with malicious mischief for grabbing his ex-girlfriend and hitting her in the chest. Taylor was sentenced to a year in jail, but the judge suspended 362 days of the original sentence and tacked on two years of probation.

Washington State head coach Mike Price punished Taylor by not allowing him access to the weight room for one month this summer.

Fourteen UCLA football players enjoy the convenience and sensibility of handicap parking, but don't understand the application process.

A handful of Bruins were found to have illegally obtained handicapped permits during the spring semester and an inquiry has led to 11 players being suspended for the first two games of the season. Three others have been granted continuances in their cases.

Out of the 11 players, five are defensive starters, which doesn't bode well for a team that was notorious for giving up the big play last year. Compounding the problem is a date with No. 9 Ohio State in UCLA's second game of the season.

The USC Trojans learned that they would have to open the season without their top fullback, senior Petros Papadakis, who broke his foot in practice on Friday.

Papadakis had eight touchdowns and rushed for 365 yards on 93 carries last season.

Good news from camp is that junior defensive tackle Ennis Davis, will start in the season-opener. Davis was rehabilitating from knee surgery and it was questionable as to when he could start up until a couple of days ago.

California freshman quarterback Ryan Sorahan. has chosen to transfer schools because he doesn't believe he'll get enough playing time with the Golden Bears.

Sorahan practiced with the team for eight days of camp before making his decision.

The Golden Bears are going into this season with uncertainty at the quarterback position. With an offense that only scored 16.6 points per game last year, Sorahan's loss could have an impact if sophomore Sam Clemons and freshman Kyle Boller, stumble out of the gate.

Oregon State University head coach Dennis Erickson, came to the Beavers program with one offensive mindset - pass the football. This may be more difficult than planned because backup quarterback Terrance Bryant, has been suspended for secondary violations of NCAA rules for the first two games of the season.

Bryant led the team with 272 passing attempts while Jonathan Smith, this year's starter threw just 181 times.

Oregon State opens up at Nevada on Sept. 4 and then hosts Fresno State, Sept. 11.

University of Oregon running back Reuben Droughns, rushed for 824 yards in only five games last season before suffering a season-ending ankle injury in a loss to UCLA.

Droughns will return to the Ducks lineup this year, although his stats last season will be much harder to match considering Oregon only returns 3 starters on the offensive side of the ball.

To put Droughns's average yards per game in perspective, Pac-10 leading rusher Trung Canidate, only mustered 110.9 yards per game. Droughns did not play in enough games to qualify for Pac-10 rushing awards.

Three Washington football players could face suspensions for reportedly inflicting damage to a fraternity in May.

Felony charges against the unidentified players were dropped because positive identification could not be made. The matter has been referred to the city attorney's office which will investigate the incident to see if misdemeanor charges could be filed.

The Huskies paid Tau Kappa Epsilon $4,400 for damage to their house.
