Soccer loses 4-3 at UTEP

By Chris Martin
Arizona Daily Wildcat, September 24, 1999

After yesterday's disappointing loss at Texas-El Paso, the UA women's soccer team is looking to rebound tomorrow afternoon when they face the Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans.

The Wildcats fell to UTEP 4-3 last night in front of 306 people at Charlie Davis Field.

Tiffany Sabado tied the game at 1-1 in the 23rd minute, but UTEP regained the lead just five minutes later. Brooke McManus scored just after halftime to tie it up at 2-2, but the Miners scored twice more to pull away with a 4-2 lead.

Chrissy Sanford, who came on as a substitute in the first half, scored with just over two minutes remaining to make it 4-3. She also added an assist on the night.

It was the first-ever night game at UTEP's stadium, and the win makes the Miners 5-2-1. The loss drops Arizona to 3-4 (0-1 Pacific 10 Conference).

Twila Kaufman had four shots to lead the Wildcats, but UTEP goalkeeper Amanda Smith got to every one of them.

Leading the way for UTEP was Kim Rogers, who had two goals and an assist. Rogers scored the eventual game-winner in the 79th minute.

Arizona felt that they could beat UTEP and come back to Tucson with a weekend sweep, but will need to fight with Arkansas-Little Rock to salvage the weekend.

The meeting between the Wildcats and the Trojans will mark the first-time the two squads have squared off.

"After playing top-ranked teams, I think we should win," junior defender Ann Giallonardo said.

Arkansas-Little Rock comes into the match against the UA with a 3-5-0 record.

Leading the way for the Trojans will be freshman midfielder Julia Yank who has three goals and one assist (seven points) on the season.

Also contributing for the Trojans is freshman Dayna Dabney, who has three goals, and senior forward Leslie Hawkins, who has tallied two goals and one assist.

Defending the net for the Trojans is rookie goalkeeper Kate Ellmo. Ellmo has recorded two shutouts this season along with a 1.63 goals against average.

The Wildcats, despite not having too much knowledge of the Trojans, are not taking them lightly at all, especially after losing to a UTEP team they thought they would defeat.

"Offensively and defensively we need to stay in the game," sophomore forward Kim McGehee said, "We must definitely play our game."
