The science of twinkology

By Maggie Burnett
Arizona Daily Wildcat,
October 14, 1999

It's been proven-even adults play with their food.

At www.twinkiesproject.com, a series of experiments were conducted to determine ingredients and different properties of an infamous fatty food, the Twinkie. Thus, the T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. Project was born. T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. stands for "Tests With Inorganic Noxious Kakes In Extreme Situations."

The experiments range from the "Rapid Oxidization Test" (lighting a Twinkie on fire) to a "Gravitational Response Test" (dropping a Twinkie off a tall building).

Students at Rice University spent their finals week in 1995 conducting the experiments.

The experimenters, science majors Chris Gouge and Todd Stadler, have been published nationwide on the Internet and in paper form about their original experiments.

Despite their light-hearted nature, the experiments are actually conducted in a very scientific manner. Each experiment includes a section for test information, descriptions, observations, conclusions and possible applications. The humor in the site lies in the comments made throughout each experiment write-up. There's even a section summarizing experiment results in haiku form.

Is there a point to all of this? Not really. The site is more or less dedicated to that person who never quite got over playing with their food.
