Death penalty hypocrisy

Talk about this story

To the editor,

I was waiting for the inevitable editorial on the Aaron McKinney trial "injustices" to make a good point. As I foresaw, the editor took the stance that McKinney's sentence of life imprisonment was in error and that he should have received a death sentence instead. What amazes me is that this same editor, or at least most of his friends, drive around town sporting, "Why do we kill people who kill people to show that killing people is wrong?" bumper stickers. How can they, in all good conscience, demand a death sentence for a murderer after they expend so much energy toward abolishing the death penalty? It just goes to show that some people can really be hypocrites when it comes to their "liberal/enlightened" beliefs and morals, or lack thereof. They rail against conservative institutions most of the time, but when it doesn't suit their purposes they backtrack faster than Bill Clinton during a formal court hearing! It's really a shame that they can't stick to their beliefs no matter what happens. So, in the spirit of another ubiquitous bumper sticker, "No whining!"
