Online news service rates university as high-crime district
	An online news service rated the UA campus area as having a "moderately high" crime rate in a national report released Nov. 10, but Tucson law enforcement officials refuted the validity of the study. In its first-ever report on college campus crime, APBnews.com ranked the University of Arizona area at a safety level of eight, with 10 being the most dangerous. The report was based on rates of reported crimes per population of 100,000 in a given city.

UA opens season play tonight
	Gone are the days of Alytus Alita of Lithuania and the California All-Stars. The UA men's basketball team will finally play a game that counts toward its record tonight when they tip-off against the Kansas State Wildcats in the first round of the Preseason National Invitation Tournament at 8:30 p.m. at McKale Center. The game will also be aired on ESPN2.

I can't drive
	Being a volunteer isn't all it's cracked up to be. At least, it isn't in Clinton, Md. where a volunteer fire department has been told their fire truck is not to be used because it has an engine which can go 72 mph (seven miles above the speed limit). The decision is the result of faulty logic on the city's part. Volunteers purchased the vehicle after an array of fund-raisers such as bake sales and raffles.

'Matisse Stories' offers look into 20th century art
	Author A.S. Byatt is proof that a picture cannot only speak a thousand words, but can do so in a style of language that is concise, beautiful and abundant with meaning. "The Matisse Stories," (Vintage, $10), by the celebrated author A.S. Byatt, is a book of three short stories each inspired by a work by the early 20th century painter Henri Matisse. Through these works of art, Byatt explores such themes as perception, sight and the emotions that can be so powerfully created through our perceptions.
