The Arizona Board of Regents yesterday approved project initiations for two campus construction projects.

University of Arizona officials will now begin planning for the $4.74 million expansion of Park Student Union and the $9 million expansion of the Ina E. Gittings dance facility.

Several members questioned the expansion of the Park Student Union bookstore, but Joel Valdez, UA's senior vice president for business affairs, said the space will always be usable.

"My largest frustration on campus is space," he said. "Is a closet empty? Clean it out, and two guys move in."

UA President Peter Likins said he doesn't think that students will be upset by the additional construction on the Park Student Union.

"If we were to create a spectacular new union and leave Park Student Union in its current state, students would be knocking on our doors if not knocking on our heads," he said.
