UCLA plagued by injury, scandal

By Brian Wahlund
Arizona Daily Wildcat, August 31, 1999

Two UCLA football players have been granted continuance in cases resulting from the alleged theft of handicap parking permits. Senior fullback Durell Price and senior offensive lineman James Ghezzi learned that their arraignment will be postponed until Sept. 14. Fourteen players total have been investigated for incidents in May, and a number of them have been suspended.

The Bruins' depleted offensive line suffered yet another blow on Thursday when they learned reserve tackle John Webb will miss the season because of a shoulder injury. Webb was supposed to play in place of Price.

The Oregon Ducks have named junior A. J. Feeley their starting quarterback for the season-opener at Michigan State on Thursday night. Feeley has never started a game and has passed the ball only 10 times in his entire Oregon career.

Feeley was battling sophomore Joey Harrington for the starting quarterback position, but head coach Mike Bellotti acknowledged that both quarterbacks would see time this season.

Washington State has also named its starting quarterback for the season - senior Steve Birnbaum will start the Cougars' first game against Utah.

Birnbaum completed just under 50 percent of his passes last year with six touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Birnbaum will have to be on his game this season if the Cougars want to move the chains. Last year's 1,000-yard rusher Kevin Brown is serving a 30-day jail sentence for theft and his return date has not yet been determined. Brown was removed from the team by head coach Mike Price over the summer.

The USC Trojans are watching NFL games tapes in preparation for their season-opener against Hawaii. No, the Hawaii Rainbows, historically one of the worst teams in Division I-A, didn't get that much better, they just imported an entire new coaching staff with an as of yet unidentified offensive package.

Trojans' head coach Paul Hackett has been showing his team tapes of the Seattle Seahawks games from last year, hoping the Rainbows' offense might be similar.
