Touring the studio

Talk about this story

KAMP radio switched studios last season - from a closet-like office in the basement of the Memorial Student Union to the more comfortable confines of the Park Student Union.

And the station is thriving now more than ever. Head music director J. P. Shub said close to 120 students are currently members of KAMP.

The new studio is a spray-painted, poster-plastered haven for a radio station. It's got two chain-link fences and 10,000 CDs inside.

Shub, a tall, wavy-haired media arts senior, has been through the good times and the bad at KAMP in his four years. He describes himself as "6 feet and 3 inches of pure anarchistic metal."

"I live it, I breathe it, I sleep it," Shub said, before describing other things he does with metal that are inappropriate for print.

In a corner of the studio, there's a 6-foot cardboard robot with the name "Son of Kampy" scribbled across its chest. The explanation goes like this: there once was an original "Kampy," but Shub destroyed him a few weeks back in a metal-induced tirade.

Shub said he has spared the life of this new robot solely because of it's relative youth.

And then there's Diep, a biochemistry and media arts freshman. Diep serves as KAMP's backbone. For 20 hours each week, she does it all - takes calls, and even fills in for other disc jockeys when they can't make it into the studio to host their shows.

When the hosts of "Loveline" came to campus last semester, Diep got a chance to talk to host Dr. Drew Pinsky. She didn't exactly giggle and ask for his autograph. The conversation went like this:

Diep: "I want to take over your job someday."

Dr. Drew: "That's fine. I'll be looking for you 10 years from now."

Diep: "That's right."

That exchange explains the KAMP style - always looking to the future and unwilling to back down - signal or no signal. The station is always looking for new members. Staff meetings are every Wednesday at 5 p.m. in Franklin 201.

"It's just like a fraternity thing," Seltzer said. "Except we give more spankings."
