Police report steady rise in car break-ins, thefts
[news] As the semesters roll by, more thieves are breaking into more cars and stealing more items from UA students, faculty and employees, police said. The amount of thefts from motor vehicles on the University of Arizona campus has risen from 24 in the fall 1998 semester to 87 for the fall 1999 semester. And with 23 thefts last month, police say it doesn't look like the trend is slowing.

Kron set to take on the world
[news]
On a recruiting trip to Northern California five years ago, Arizona rugby head coach Dave Sitton found a player who proceeded to change the UA program during the last five years. Chris Kron, a 6-foot, 180 pound fifth year senior from Sarotoga, Calif., started playing rugby for his high school's club team. "Chris really liked the program," Sitton said. "He heard we had a really good team and from then on he was set on going to the University of Arizona."

Editorial: Stronger actions needed to combat hate crimes
[news] Presidential debates have recently brought civil rights to the foregrounds of the national psyche. This, of course, includes the perpetual battles over abortion and ethics in the White House. Candidates have also bickered over the subject of gays in the military, but have neglected to address a more ominous threat to the homosexual community - hate crimes.

'Orchestra of voices' to perform at Crowder Hall
[news]
The heralded a cappella vocal ensemble, Chanticleer, will showcase over 500 years of musical composition tonight and tomorrow at UA Crowder Hall. Founded by tenor Louis Botto in 1978, the orchestra has met great national success, including a Grammy nomination in 1999. The group members, however, are known for their voices as well as their innovation. "Chanticleer is more than a chorus - they are a vocal chamber ensemble," said UA Presents publicist Tappan King. "They use their voices like the instruments in an orchestra."

Quotable:
"We're in the midst of a lot of very vocal anti-gay speech. That's the kind of stuff that fosters actual violence."

-David Robinson, UA assistant English professor, on Sundayâs stabbing of a gay student on Fourth Avenue.
