Likins announces hiring freeze

Vacant UA positions will go unfilled

Almost no new faculty or staff will be hired between today and Dec. 1, UA President Peter Likins announced yesterday.

The freeze on new hires comes as a result of a $13.8 million cut in state funding to the University of Arizona, which Gov. Jane Dee Hull said could later increase.

"We're dealing with the issues that will cause extreme pain for some individuals," Likins said. "But we will keep this university on course. We will take the hit and walk through it together."

Faculty senate votes to increase faculty salaries by at least 5 percent

Across-the-board salary increases for UA employees, which are scheduled to take effect in April, may designate more money for faculty than an earlier plan allowed.

Volleyball player suspended for behavioral issues

Arizona head volleyball coach David Rubio announced yesterday junior outside hitter Shannon Torregrosa will be suspended for an indefinite amount of time due to what he called conduct detrimental to the team.

Rubio said the suspension was due to behavioral issues that have had a negative effect on the team.

Dale column flawed

I am disappointed no one responded to Mr. Dale's factual commentary with a further look at the facts. He correctly states that the NRI survey counts 5.2 percent of our land as developed. He also lists how 21 percent of the land is owned by the government (and I assume he believes safe and untouched)...
